What is tracking?

Tracking is the canine discipline of hunting for humans and is completed for fun. The method of working the dog has no reference to a specific human odour pattern, i.e. no article is offered to the dog to smell in order to identify a discriminatory scent.

Thedogman can teach the dog and owner team the technique of tracking and the following of humans. Tracking is a fascinating subject and extremely rewarding for both the dog and owner.

Tracking is not for the faint hearted and only the physically fit and committed canine enthusiasts would be suitable for training.

The subjects covered in the coaching are:

  • An introduction to the associated learning theories of the canine
  • The dog’s perception of odour and olfaction
  • Theories of ground and airborne scent
  • The environmental factors that affect scent
  • Factors specific to the trail
  • Track laying techniques
  • Soft surface pattern and pursuit tracks
  • Indication of articles left on a track
  • Hard surface tracking (Advanced)
  • Handlers influence do’s and don’ts
  • Diet / nutrition

To note

Breeds. German Shepherds, Belgian Shepherds and Labradors are the most popular. The dog must display a good sense of smell and of a sociable disposition, playful - ball crazy is ideal - and willing to learn

Gender. Either, a dog can be disrupted if tracking in the presence of another animal of the same species. Especially if it’s a bitch in season

Age. Adult dogs only*

Health. A dog can only track effectively if it is fully fit and healthy, please consult your veterinary practice prior to expressing an interest

Tiredness. Tracking is extremely demanding on the dog and handler team, regular training will improve the physical performance and accuracy

Owner. The owner must have a good bond, trust and knowledge of his/her dog

*Puppies and young dogs are welcome for introductory free tracking (no tracking line attached) sessions. Please seek advice from your Veterinary Consultant.
